Customers urged not install dangerous shower heads

Silva Homes have recently been made aware of a burns incident where a customer had recently installed a “start-stop button” shower head purchased on an online marketplace. These “start-stop button” shower heads are extremely dangerous and can cause second- and third-degree burns. Shower heads for electric showers should always be the correct make and model for the shower.

The specific “start-stop” shower heads do not meet General Product Safety Regulations 2005 and present a serious safety hazard when installed with electric showers. They can cause the water in the appliance to overheat rapidly as the showerhead stops the flow of water without turning off the electric shower heating system.

These shower heads can also cause damage to the shower unit itself by creating back pressure and there is a risk of blowing the pressure release valve (PRV). We have seen several shower units that have needed replacing recently where alternative shower heads have been installed.

We would like to remind all customers that safe replacement showerheads for electric showers are to always be the manufacturers’ own. Please check the make and model of your shower before purchasing the correct shower head from a reputable supplier.

We ask that any customers that have installed an alternative shower head please remove it immediately as you may be putting anyone that uses it at risk, and please replace it with a suitable shower head.
